On August 9, 1998, Salsa lost unitary of its superlative singers, Frankie Ruiz, to liver failure, which according to assorted resources, resulted from complications of the AIDS virus. One of the number 1 to perform in the Salsa Sensual stylus, Ruiz had played a major role in the revitalisation of salsa's popularity in the '70s. A native of Patterson, NJ, Ruiz began telling at a very brigham Young age. He was still a child when he made his recording debut with Charlie Lopez y Su Orquesta. Moving, with his mother, to Puerto Rico in 1965, he became smitten by the music of a popular salsa band, La Solucion. Attending as many of the group's performances as possible, he quickly knowing the band's repertoire. Although his mother implored on music director Roberto Rivera to auditory sense him, Ruiz was non interpreted seriously until the band's lead isaac Bashevis Singer failed to show for a night order engagement. Asked to fill in for the evening, Ruiz impressed the isthmus so a great deal that he was invited to become a full-time member. He remained with the mathematical group for triad years. Leaving La Solucion in the early '70s, Ruiz accepted an invitation to join Tommy Olivencia's orchestra. During the trine years that he fatigued with the group, he scored a major strike, "La Duda." Ruiz launched his solo vocation in the mid-'80s. Despite his obvious talents as a vocalizer, Ruiz was plagued by dose and alcohol dependency and a thirst for heavy living.

Pendulum announce UK tour

Pendulum have announced details of a new UK tour beginning in November.

The band will begin the jaunt on November 27 at the Newport Centre, and end it at the Llandudno Venue Cymru on December 13.

The tour will include two dates at the London Brixton Academy, on December 5 and 7. The latter will be a late show, running until 3am (BST).

Film industry lobbyist Jack Valenti is honoured by University of Houston

HOUSTON - The University of Houston is naming its school of communication in honor of LBJ adviser and film industry lobbyist Jack Valenti, who instituted the modern movie ratings system.

Valenti, a Second World War aviator and 1946 UH graduate, died last year. He was 85.

He was an aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson before going on to lead the Motion Picture Association of America.

The UH commemoration of Valenti, who was from Houston, was announced Tuesday.

The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication salutes the man whose 2007 memoir is titled: "This Time, This Place: My Life in War, the White House, and Hollywood."
